Drum making

[Anchor Lead] An unusual exhibit about nature's sacrifice to produce energy is underway in Seoul. The art show is an expression of our gratitude for nature that provides us with electricity.
[Pkg] Yellow drum containers loaded with radioactive waste from a nuclear power plant. Rocks from the ground where these barrels were buried fly toward the florescent lights. The florescent bulbs break and the lights go off one by one. This piece showed the retaliation of the earth after being sacrificed to generate electricity.
[Soundbite] HAN MOO-KWON(MEDIA ARTIST) : "I was impressed by the huge plant that produced electricity, which is invisible. I wanted to create art with it." The media artist with a ten-year career observed four nuclear reactors as well as thermo and hydro power plants. He arranged rocks from a disposal site in Gyeongju on a grassy field in the pattern of electrocardiograms. Water from a power plant is frozen and shaped into a chandelier to play a drum.
[Soundbite] HAN MOO-KWON(MEDIA ARTIST) : "We are not grateful to have electricity. But we need to conserve our resources for the future generation." From the production of electricity at power plants to the disposal of nuclear waste... This exhibit highlights how valuable energy is and how we should be thankful for nature's sacrifice.

MOOKWON HAN ‘TRUMPET’

2020.7.27 – 9.6

Choi & Lager Gallery Seoul presents “Trumpet” by Mookwon Han, on view from the 27th of July through the 6th of September. Han is a New York-based Korean Artist, who strives to raise awareness of global environmental issue through works that utilize a variety of media such as video, photography and installations, putting emphasis on the themes of electricity and power plants.

The exhibition presents the ongoing record of the artist’s efforts in developing an avant-garde orchestra inspired by his visits to several power plants. This project began by observing the use of purified air and water, philosophical ideals, in the process of making electricity in power plants. The exhibition showcases his 2019 project ‘Drum’, along with icicles made of purified water, to beat the drum below – emulating a sailor raising his anchor to set sail toward Thomas More’s Utopia. In the meantime, a tank full of purified air is pumped into the trumpet.

Growing up with a lot of interest in the nuclear power plants near his hometown of Gyeongju, the artist explores the dependence of modern society on electricity, and their near hypocritical disdain towards power plants. Just as the massive, imposing power plants produce invisible electricity, the artist’s artistic energetic, forceful motions lead to the invisible, yet resounding sounds of the drum and trumpet. The importance ascribed to the purity of air and water used in the works further establishes the artist’s intention to express gratitude for power plants and nature, and for their continued sacrifice for the sake of men.

Stones from a nuclear waste repository are exacting revenge on array of fluorescent lamps, and the lifecycle of electricity - from its birth at power plants to its inevitable demise of being buried underground - is told through the metaphor of a heartbeat. Han imbues personhood to nature and electricity, and as such, he greatly underlines the need for empathy and gratitude for the resources we normally take for granted. Channeling the Pied Pieper of Hamelin, he beats the drum and blows the trumpet to lead us from the mired power plants to his elegant orchestra, from arrogance and indifference to gratitude and humility. We are experiencing unprecedented times, where the masks we have to wear to prevent the spread of Covid-19 make it that much harder to breath, and the dying words of George Floyd gasping for air echo in our ears. The need for respect and empathy – for air, water, and other who may seem different from us – is more vital than ever.

the nuclear power plant that uses the “pure” water and air in the turbine. How countless great minds and artists struggled whole their life to find the truth nature of pure during arrogant art history? Although the meaning of pure is intangible, pure water and air, as addtive are already existed in industrial factories. Han was inspired by dynamic and active concept of industrial reason and its method. Han interprets from the unsolved conceptual existence of pure, approaching to the abstract conceptual prospect in an aspect of specific creation like pure......
