Metamorphoses by Kafka and Ovid

Kafkaesque, the key to Kafka;s writing, "the Body and the Unfamiliar"

​

the beetle in Kafka's Metamorphosis left behind the traces of its movement with the mucus from its skin.

And I draw my trajectory as I go cycling across the Queensboro Bridge everyday. 

I write poems with my body.1)

​

Kafka was a Western Jew of German descent living in Prague a century ago, whereas  I am a South Korean southerner living in New York. Unfamiliarity means movement and that's also identity.

Kafka works with narratives of returning home after finishing an incredible journey, whereas I am working on a structure that is still in progress.

In Ovid's Metamrphoses and Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus passed through the sea by stuffing his men's ears with beeswax so that they could not hear the Sirens' songs, causing the furious Siren to rush to the sea.

Kafka said the singing of the Siren was to stop up the ears, but nothing can stop up silence. Nothingness.

Half of their bodies secretly turned from birds to fish over the course of 2,800 years.2)

And their writing about songs that you've never heard of or silence really hits home.

The siren posters are posted in each metro station where I get off: Hunters Point, Court Square, 79th Street.

I think Kafka's observations and interpretations are quite similar to my own, and I ask him questions in my imaginary dialogues with him.

In the Fortress3) of these dense buildings, my existence4) is like this, 

"Kafka, what is life?"

I asked and he answered as shown in this video and I recorded his responses with my body. I have invited guides to the humanities to enjoy a feast.

1) A technique that capture my body movement in the air and builds each frame by computer. My body is equivalent to a writing brush. My piece "Piston" is a poem written by machines.

2) The period when Homer lived 2,800 years ago was 8th century B.C. whereas the time period in which three generations before and after my own could live is approximately 160 years.

3) Site specific narrative video like the Discovery series, Governors Island in New York, Skowhegan in the state of Maine

4) Existentialism, that is individual essence

카프카와 오비드의 변신, Metamorphoses

카프카의 변신에 나오는 갑충은 피부점액으로 움직임의 흔적을 남겼다. 매일 퀸즈보로 브릿지를 사이클링 오르며 그 궤적을 긋는다.

나는 몸으로 시를 쓴다.(1) 

 

카프카는 백년전 프라하의 독일계 서부 유대인이고 나는 뉴욕의 남한 남부사람인데, 

이방성은 움직임이며 그게 정체성이다.

카프카는 굉장한 여정을 마치고 집으로 돌아오는 서사이고 나는 진행중인 구조이다.

오비드의 변신과 호머의 오딧세이에 오디세우스는 사이렌의 소리에 밀납으로 선원의 귀를 막고 

바다를 통과하고 이에 분노한 사이렌 바다로 돌진한다. 

카프카는 사이렌의 노래는 귀를 막는데 침묵은 아무도 못막는다고 했다. 막을게 없는.

이천팔백년간(2) 몸의 반이 새에서 물고기로 슬쩍 변하고

들어본적 없는 노래나 침묵도 참 와닫게 글을 쓰는 그들

그 사이렌이 내가 서는 헌터스포인트, 코트스퀘어, 79가 역마다 붙어있다.

카프카의 관찰과 해석이 참 내말 같아서, 카프카와 대화를 상상하며 묻는다. 

‘카프카, 생명은 무얼까?’

이 빌딩숲 요새(fortress)(3)에서 내 실존(4)은 이러한데, '카프카, 어때?'

그가 이 비디오처럼 답하고 내가 몸으로 기록했다. 인문학의 안내자들을 청하여 향연을 누린다.

(1) 공중에서 몸의 움직임을 포착하고 컴퓨터가 각 프레임을 쌓는 기법. 몸이 붓이다. PISTON은 기계로 쓴 시이다. 

(2) 호머가 살던 시기는 BC 8C, 내 앞뒤 3세대가 살 시간은 약160년.
